Spacing between teeth after scaling is primarily caused by edema reduction. Scaling is a dental procedure that removes plaque and tartar buildup from the teeth and the surface of the gums, which often leads to inflammation and swelling (edema) in the periodontal tissues. When this swelling decreases following scaling, the teeth can appear to have increased spacing as the surrounding soft tissues that may have contributed to the feeling of crowding return to a more normal state.

In this context, other factors do not directly lead to the spacing seen post-scaling. Bone loss can create instability in the dentition but does not immediately cause spacing in the way that edema reduction does; it is a more chronic issue that could lead to tooth mobility over time. Increased pocket depth can occur due to periodontal disease and also doesn't result in spacing immediately after scaling. New cavity formation may cause issues with teeth alignment over time, but it is unrelated to the immediate effects of scaling on the soft tissues surrounding the teeth. Therefore, the reduction of tissue swelling after treatment is the most relevant reason for observing spacing between teeth following a scaling procedure.
